UCI Fundraiser Quits in Midst of $1 Billion Campaign

“Thomas Mitchell, UC Irvine’s fundraising chief, has resigned his position in the middle of the university’s first $1 billion capital campaign to become vice president for development and alumni affairs at the University of Florida. He’ll start his new job on June 1.

UCI has raised $512 million of the $1 billion sought in the “Shaping the Future” campaign, which officially began in October 2008. Much of that money was raised before the official phase of the campaign began.

Mitchell’s resignation comes less than a year after UCI experienced a $46 million drop in annual private donations and pledges. The university finished the last fiscal year with $83.8 million, which was down from a record $130 million a year earlier, as former Register reporter Ben Young Landis reported at the time.
