Debrief: March 22nd Rally & Liveblog!!

I wanted to give a quick shoutout today to the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, and the California State Student Association for an amazing march/rally at the North Steps of the Capitol today!

I’m not terribly good at estimating the size of the crowd, but I would say that it was well into a thousand students there (Fresno State’s The Collegian estimates “thousands”), very loud, very activist, and very ready to hold the state accountable to it’s upcoming budget process!

There were a good number of legislators and former legislators there, including Assemblymember Warren Furutani (speaking about his CalGrant legislation that would increase the CalGrant by the cost of inflation), Assemblymember Paul Fong, Assemblymember Alberto Torrico (speaking about his oil severance tax bill that would fund higher education AB656), Chancellor of the CCC’s Jack Scott (he is a former legislator).  There were more Assemblymembers there before I got there, and I apologize if I’ve left significant ones out of the picture.

Russell Statham and Nicole Anderson, the Student Trustees of the CSU (CSU versions of me and Jesse Bernal), were also there!  Michelle Price, the Student Governor of the CCC, also spoke.  Of course, a large presence by Steve Dixon, President of the CSSA, and Reid Milburn, President of the SSCCC as well!  UCSA showed its solidarity with Malerie Michael, a transfer student at UC Irvine (zot zot!)

No doubt, I need to give props to the Cal State and the Community College students, who know how to mobilize to Sacramento in a big, big way!!

ALSO! DON’T FORGET THAT I’LL BE LIVEBLOGGING HERE TOMORROW, STARTING AT 10:30AM WITH THE COMMISSION ON THE FUTURE MEETING!!!  COME CHECK IT OUT, IT’S GOING TO BE A VERY EXCITING MEETING!

ALSO, BECAUSE I’VE BEEN GETTING A LOT OF TEXT MESSAGES ASKING…YES THE COMMISSION ON THE FUTURE MEETING WILL BE PUBLIC TOMORROW! ALL OF IT!  Mission Bay Campus, Community Center, UCSF, 10:30AM, with public comment at the end (1:30PM).  So roll in if you’re in the city and represent!
