Now that Jerry Brown is the new governor of California, many students are eager to hear his plan for the UC system and its rising fees. Brown’s role within the Regents of the UC is immense; not only is he a chairman, but he also holds a strong influence over the UC system and its funding. Brown will set the state funding for the universities in his budget proposal, which assumes a certain fee level. He will also create a compact with the UC that estimates the expected amount or maximum fee increases per year.
Although Brown has not taken a clear stance or made any apparent promises over higher education during his campaign, he has come up with a few blue print plans that he hopes will help California’s higher education. One such plan includes fighting federal courts orders that increase prison spending and transfer that money to the UC system.
