UC 411: 8 percent fee increase on regent’s November meeting agenda

An 8 percent fee increase will be voted at the upcoming November regent’s meeting and yes, the student regent will be voting no on the fee hike believing it to be the wrong solution to UC’s long-term problems.

UC President, Mark Yudof, has also proposed an extension on financial aid to complement the fee increase but advocates such as Claudia Magana, president of the UC Student Association, doesn’t believe it will help students as they will need to take out larger loans which UC considers aid.

Though $600 million of new funds will be asked from the state, Yudof said UC would have to endure cuts in enrollment, the elimination of programs and more layoffs if these funds were not received.

Stay tuned.
