11 Muslim Student Union members charged with disrupting Israeli ambassador’s speech at UC Irvine
Though Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of UC Irvine’s law school, said that he didn’t think criminal charges were warranted and “university discipline was sufficient,”the Irvine 11 were charged on Friday with conspiring to disrupt a meeting and speech at UC Irvine last year by the Israeli ambassador to the United States.
Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas stated, “We cannot tolerate a preplanned violation of the law, even if the crime takes place on a school campus and even if the defendants are college students. In our democratic society, we cannot tolerate a deliberate, organized, repetitive and collective effort to significantly disrupt a speaker who hundreds assembled to hear.”
MSU denied planning to obstruct the event.
