UC 411: Advocacy Day in Sacramento

On Tuesday UC students, faculty and staff plan to gather in Sacramento for Advocacy Day. A day promoting the public education and the value it has for the state. Many hope that this social movement will stop further budget cuts to the public colleges and universities. UC president, Mark Yudof, and other UC officials plan to meet with legislators that day in order to discuss their current financial problems. They hope that they will have the chance to discuss the cuts with the Governor himself. Many believe that these cuts will not sustain education quality for the future.

UC 411: Oakland competes to open newest UC national Lab

The UC is looking for a land in which they would be able to build the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory campus and Oakland looks like it is in the running to be the spot. The Mayor of Oakland sent a five page letter explaining why Oakland is the best city to build this prestigious new lab. Some main reasons in the letter were the close proximity to public transit, weather, amenities, and well-educated work force. If Oakland were to receive this new campus it would bring prestige, jobs, and a huge economic impact, garnering millions of dollars for the city. Because of the campuses’ large impact, many other cities have sent in proposals for the campus as well including Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Dublin, Richmond and Walnut Creek. The final decision will be made in June.
