UCLA and Berkeley Grad Students Protest Union

Teaching Assistant from UCLA and Berkeley started a protest against the Union that represents them, United Auto Workers Local (UAW) 2865, at their Los Angeles and Berkeley offices. The students claim that there were irregularities in counting ballots for the election of a union officer. The election was between an incumbent slate, and a reform slate, which had concerns with the current union becoming ineffective and absent from the campuses. At UCLA union hall, the current election committee, which supported the incumbent slate, counted the votes, except for UCLA and Berkeley, which happened to be the biggest supporters of the reform slate. The committee explained that they questioned the integrity of Berkeley balloting. The students from the reform slate occupied UCLA union hall overnight and swore to stay until all the votes were counted.
